Ein Stadion als Hauptdarsteller: Das Olympiastadion Berlin ist die »Arena der Nation«, in der Millionen Menschen unvergessliche Stunden erlebten. Es war der Schauplatz der Olympischen Spiele 1936 mit dem unsterblichen Jesse Owens und des Endspiels um die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006. Der Fußball-Bundesligist Hertha BSC trägt darin seine Heimspiele aus. Das ehemalige Reichssportfeld zählt aber auch zu den beeindruckendsten Architekturdenkmälern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es blieb die einzige realisierte Großanlage des »Dritten Reiches«, die auf der 1909 eröffneten Galopprennbahn und dem darin eingebetteten Deutschen Stadion errichtet wurde. Das Buch erzählt die 100-jährige Geschichte eines denkwürdigen Bauwerks, das seit seiner Sanierung zu den »Fünf-Sterne-Stadien« gehört.

The former Reichssportfeld is also among the most impressive architectural monuments of the 20th century. It was the only major project of the ›Third Reich‹ that was ever completed, erected as it was on the site of the racecourse – opened in 1909 – and of the ›German Stadium‹ which lay within it. This book tells the 100 year history of a memorable building complex, which since its redevelopment and modernisation is one of the world’s ›Five Star Stadia‹.
